{"id":6628,"date":"2021-09-11T13:37:21","date_gmt":"2021-09-11T18:37:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/decideoutside.com\/?p=6628"},"modified":"2021-10-11T12:55:40","modified_gmt":"2021-10-11T17:55:40","slug":"how-to-rotate-your-rollerblade-wheels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/decideoutside.com\/how-to-rotate-your-rollerblade-wheels\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Rotate Your Rollerblade Wheels: Step-By-Step With Pictures"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I recently bought a pair of inline skates (Rollerblades) and decided I&#8217;d spend an hour every practicing and really give the sport a go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The wheels my skates came with wore down REAL fast.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reasons why this excessive wear happened so quickly are many, <strong>but I had to learn how to rotate my skates<\/strong>.  I thought I&#8217;d go through the process and show you how to do it.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This how-to article is about <strong>rotating inline skates with 4 wheels.  <\/strong>The rotation pattern is different for 5+ wheel skates but the concepts are similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, if you are replacing your wheels, the removal process is the same.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(as a note&#8230;you&#8217;ll notice that I had to flip the images because I didn&#8217;t go in the exact order of this article.  This shouldn&#8217;t affect you)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What You Will Need<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gather the following materials:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Your Skates<\/strong>.  Align them like you would if you were riding them<\/li><li><strong>Two Allen wrenches <\/strong>(one for each side of the wheel you&#8217;re removing) that fit the axles of your skates.  Your skates should have come with these.  If you don&#8217;t have these Allen wrenches (hex keys), they can be easily bought at the hardware store.<\/li><li><strong>Bearing Cleaning Kit (Optional)<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>About 30-60 minutes<\/strong> (good time to listen to music or an audiobook if you ask me)<\/li><li><strong>Two paper plates<\/strong>: You want to keep track of which skate a wheel is coming from. If you just want to rotate the wheels, you can skip that section.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Important:  Don&#8217;t forget to flip both wheels before attaching them to the other skate.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Next, flip both wheels (important!)<\/strong>, and swap them with the opposite skate&#8217;s wheel. This is because sometimes <strong>the spacer is loose between the two bearings (not an issue) and so the sleeve can&#8217;t pass through.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When putting the axle through the wheels, make sure the spacer is aligned in such a way that the axle can pass through it (just shake the wheel around until it&#8217;s aligned)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reattaching wheel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you know about the spacer, you can put the screw into the sleeve on both sides of the wheel and then screw them together with the same two Allen wrenches.  Hold one Allen wrench while you twist the other <strong>clockwise<\/strong> until the axle is snug.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You shouldn&#8217;t use a ton of force on this. Assemble the bearing kit: Cut a small hole in the lid\/cap of the bottle. The hole needs to be big enough for the 6-inch rod to go through. 2. Put the gasket\/black ring on the rod. 3. Put the rod through the lid\/cap of the bottle. 4. Put the washer on. 5. Tighten the nut down to the bottom of the lid\/cap. 6. Cut 1\/4&quot; pieces of a ballpoint pen sleeve for spacers. 7. Place bearings on the rod with 1 bearing spacer between each bearing. (remove seals or shields first). 8. Hand tighten the wing-nut until the bearings are nut on the rod. 9. Fill the bottle 1\/3 with citrus cleaner. 10. Place the bearings in the bottle and tighten the lid. Directions for cleaning with a kit 1. Remove bearings shields\/seals first. See how here (link). 2. Wipe off dirt on the bearings and shields\/ seals. 3. Assemble kit. 4. Fill the container about 1\/3rd of the way with cleaner. 5. Insert bearings. 5. Shake the kit for a couple minutes. 6. Takes the bearings out (leave on the rod). 7. Tap the bearing on a hard surface to remove contaminants. 8. Repeat shaking for couple of minutes (repeat steps 5,6,7 if needed). 9. Rince bearings in very hot water (keep them on the rod. This removes the cleaner. IT IS PERFECTLY OK.) 10. Immediately blow-dry your bearings to remove all the water. Use cooking tongs if bearings are too hot to hold in your hand. 11. Lubricate each bearing with about 1-2 drops of thin lubricant. We like electronic oils and sewing machine oils. WHEN TO CLEAN AND LUBE: For avid skaters, meaning you skate to and from school and skate on the weekends, check lubricant every 2-3 weeks. Clean every 3-4 weeks. If you skate 1-2 days a week, you can stretch out the maintenance by lubricating every 4-6 weeks, and cleaning every 2 months. PERMANENT (NON-REMOVABLE) SHIELDS: 1. You can clean non-removable metal shields the same way shown in the video, or apply lube and ride them until they break. 2. The most important thing to do is dry the bearings completely by spinning the bearings while using a hairdryer. 3. If you have skate oil, great, but sewing machine oil, or hair clipper oil, or any other lightweight oil that doesn&#8217;t have any cleaning agent will do fine.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Do I Know If I Need To Rotate My Inline Skate Wheels?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Short answer, when your wheels start to taper. That&#8217;s a pretty strong taper and I should have rotated a bit sooner.
