And while we do have a large 45 foot Class A RV, a smoker\nwas just too big to fit underneath the coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then I heard\nabout pellet smokers and how some of them were considered portable. That made\nme want to learn more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are\nconsidering a pellet grill or smoker for your RV, let me share my research on\nhow I found the perfect portable pellet grill\u2026 and smoker! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Davy Crockett Beats Traeger\u2019s Portable Pellet Grill for RVing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Read our review of the Davy Crockett portable pellet grill. We\nhave a great portable gas grill made by Coleman that works well, but it\u2019s not\ncapable of easily smoking foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My old smoker\nwas an electric kettle smoker with hardwood chunks and a pan of water that you\nhad to keep refilling. These types of kettle smokers require constant\nmonitoring to maintain temperatures and avoid flare-ups that can burn your\nfood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So when I\nstarted researching Pellet Smokers, I knew I would have a lot to learn. I\ndidn\u2019t even know how they worked. Here\u2019s what I learned about Pellet Grills and\nSmokers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Differences Between Grilling, Smoking, and Barbecuing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I know that\nthere\u2019s a difference between smoking meat and grilling meat, but isn\u2019t grilling\njust another name for barbecuing? Surprisingly, no it\u2019s not! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grilling, smoking, and barbecuing are all done at different temperatures for different periods of time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time for a\nquick lesson on the different types of outdoor cooking so we can choose the\nright pellet grill or pellet smoker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grilling<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/decideoutside.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/steak-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/decideoutside.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/steak-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/decideoutside.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/steak-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/decideoutside.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/steak.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You grill to\nseal in natural juices of meats that are generally tender to begin with. Grilling\nis done over high heat (400-550 degrees F) for just a few minutes. Think steaks,\nburgers or chicken here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BBQing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you barbecue,\nyou may be using the same grill that you used for your steaks, but this time\nyour heat is much lower (190\u00b0F to 300\u00b0F) and you cook for much longer (a few hours). You grill\nsteaks or hamburgers, you BBQ ribs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Smoking Food- Two Different Ways?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Smoking food is entirely different than barbecuing. There are two types of smoking, cold smoking, and hot smoking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cold smoking is\ndone at very low heat (68-86 F) for hours or even days and is normally done on meat\nthat has been previously cooked or cured. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hot smoking involves cooking at temperatures in the range of 180-225 degrees F for many hours and is used on foods that need to be fully cooked. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/decideoutside.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/smoked-fish-RVNS-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Smoked Fish\" class=\"wp-image-5476\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Smoked Fish Photo Credit DecideOutside<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>None of the\npellet smokers we found cooked at temperatures below 150 degrees, so we are\nonly talking about hot smoking food in this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can Pellet Grills Smoke and BBQ Food too?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ok, now that\nwe know a little bit about the differences in outdoor cooking, time to answer\nthe question of- Do we need to carry around two different appliances in order to\nenjoy grilling and smoking during camping?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice how I\nkeep changing the way I refer to them? Sometimes it is Pellet Smoker, and\nsometimes it is Pellet Grill. That was one of the first things I learned. It turns\nout that some Pellet Smokers can also grill, and some Pellet Grills can also\nsmoke. How about that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Does an\nElectric Pellet Grill or Smoker Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nsmoker\/grill is electric and has a hopper that you put hardwood pellets into.\nAt the bottom of the hopper, there\u2019s an auger that turns and, as it turns, it\nfeeds the pellets into a firebox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The firebox\nhas a heat-rod in it that ignites the pellets, and a combustion fan circulates\nthe air to keep them burning.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/decideoutside.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/grill_side_900-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"side pellet grill\" class=\"wp-image-5467\" style=\"width:330px;height:220px\" width=\"330\" height=\"220\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Davy Crockett Pellet Grill Side- Photo Credit DecideOutside<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>A built-in digital controller manages the temperature of the grill by controlling the airflow and pellet supply to the firebox. High-Tech stuff. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The very precise temperatures achieved inside your smoker grill help you cook delicious smoked or barbequed foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tip: Smoking food is done at relatively low\ntemperatures, usually in the range of 180-225 degrees Fahrenheit. Anything over\n250 degrees Fahrenheit and you are barbecuing your food- not smoking it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Choose A Wood Pellet Grill<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the\nmajor advantages of wood pellet grills is that you can use different woods to\ncreate different flavors in your foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other major advantage of electric wood pellet grills is that they are very easy to use- just push a button to start so no propane tanks or refills are needed. They keep consistent temperature ranges so no flare-ups or worries about over smoking or cooking your food. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All you have\nto do is make sure there are wood pellets in the hopper!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why So Much Research on Pellet Grills- Isn\u2019t\nTraeger the best?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Joe Traeger developed the Traeger pellet grill in 1985 and patented it in 1986. They are the oldest Pellet Grill manufacturer and have a long reputation for being the best. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technology has changed a lot since 1986, and there are now several competing pellet grill manufacturers that are also offering top-quality products. We needed to learn about the features of pellet grills so that we could pick the right one for camping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Makes Portable Pellet Grills?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\nsearch the internet for portable pellet grills, a bunch will come up but not\nall of them are what we as RVers would consider really portable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We decided that in order for a pellet grill to be portable for us, it would need to weigh less than 65 pounds (so we could lift it out to cook on) and be small enough to fit into one of our RV basements. It makes no sense to buy a pellet grill if you have to leave it behind when you travel!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pellet\nGrill Features- What We Looked for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are\nmany different features available on pellet grills, and we had to do a lot of\nresearch to be able to compare them equally. Here are the features we felt are\nmost important in a portable pellet grill and smoker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overall\nWeight- <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In order for us\nto be able to take our pellet grill with us camping, we wanted it to weigh no\nmore than 65 pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Folded\nDimensions- <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We needed our\npellet grill to fit into one of our RV basements, so we wanted the smallest\noutside dimensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cooking\nSurface Area- <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though we\nwanted a compact grill, we looked for whichever ones had the biggest cooking\nsurface area for their size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hopper\nsize- <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The hopper is where you put the hardwood pellets. We didn\u2019t want too small of a hopper so we didn\u2019t have to keep refilling it during a cooking session. Around 10 pounds seems good to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Temperature\nRange- <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We wanted the\noption to be able to sear our food, and still have smoker capabilities so\nhaving a high cooking temperature available was important to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WiFi\nEnabled- <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some pellet grills are WiFi-enabled to allow you to control and monitor temperatures, create cooking profiles and set timers and receive alerts. It has folding legs, the largest cook surface (501 square\ninches) of any of the pellet grills but was way too heavy for us to consider.\nAt 82 pounds, I think this may be considered a tailgater grill instead of a\nportable RV pellet grill. Plus, it doesn\u2019t come with Wi-Fi abilities, so we\ncrossed Camp Chef off of our list of portable pellet grills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe style=\"width:120px;height:240px;\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;OneJS=1&amp;Operation=GetAdHtml&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;source=ss&amp;ref=as_ss_li_til&amp;ad_type=product_link&amp;tracking_id=mindbuilders-rvnstyle-20&amp;marketplace=amazon&amp;region=US&amp;placement=B07JBQCMQ6&amp;asins=B07JBQCMQ6&amp;linkId=37c2f7cea22be7ea732727c46bea9de9&amp;show_border=true&amp;link_opens_in_new_window=true\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pit Boss Tailgater<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pit Boss has a reputation for making good grills and the Tailgater model looks like a good choice. It has the next largest cooking surface of 341 square inches, but with a weight of 93 pounds. I think the name Tailgater is an accurate one! Again, no Wi-Fi and a very small hopper bin of only 5 pounds and the Pit Boss was not in the running for an RV grill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe style=\"width:120px;height:240px;\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;OneJS=1&amp;Operation=GetAdHtml&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;source=ss&amp;ref=as_ss_li_til&amp;ad_type=product_link&amp;tracking_id=mindbuilders-rvnstyle-20&amp;marketplace=amazon&amp;region=US&amp;placement=B07D9SXZH8&amp;asins=B07D9SXZH8&amp;linkId=720c77394c4c898d709a3577c82daf14&amp;show_border=true&amp;link_opens_in_new_window=true\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Traeger\u2019s Three Portable Grills- The Scout, Ranger, and Tailgater<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For Traeger,\nthere were really three portable grills to consider. There were two Table-top\nmodels called the Scout and the Ranger, and they had a stand-alone model called\nthe Tailgater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Small\nTable Top Traegers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The two\ntable-top models were very intriguing considering that they were contained all\nin one, with a case-like enclosure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main difference between the two was that the Ranger had a more precise temperature adjustment, and the hopper held 8 lbs of pellets instead of 4 lbs for the Scout. They both had a cooking surface of 176 square inches which just seemed too small. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other\nissue with the table-top models was the lack of availability. I couldn\u2019t find\nthem anywhere. Every place I checked including Amazon was out of stock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, for\nTraeger, it came down to the Tailgater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Traeger Tailgater<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I really\nwanted to get a look at this grill to check out the hype surrounding Traeger.\nThe closest dealer that carried the Tailgater in stock was 20 miles away, so my\nwife and I loaded up and headed that way. I really expected to come home with\nthe grill since it fit my weight criteria at 62 lbs, and it had such a good\nreputation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we\nfinally got to the dealer and took a look at the grill, I found that I was a\nlittle underwhelmed. This is not to take anything away from the Tailgater. It is\na nice grill, and it is portable, though maybe a bit bulky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe style=\"width:120px;height:240px;\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;OneJS=1&amp;Operation=GetAdHtml&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;source=ss&amp;ref=as_ss_li_til&amp;ad_type=product_link&amp;tracking_id=mindbuilders-rvnstyle-20&amp;marketplace=amazon&amp;region=US&amp;placement=B01CD58XMQ&amp;asins=B01CD58XMQ&amp;linkId=571db7885e6a4a6914f2c9e23ada411a&amp;show_border=true&amp;link_opens_in_new_window=true\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tailgater\nLacks Features Found In Competing Pellet Grills<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>My issue with\nthe Tailgater is that it is just so basic for the price. I learned about all of\nthe grills that had Wi-Fi, and apps and meat probes to help control cooking. The\nTailgater is not Wi-Fi capable, and it does not have a meat probe. This is\nmeant to be a portable grill for, well tailgating, and small spaces. So, I can\nunderstand how some of the other features would be limited to maintain that portability.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Trager Tailgater Is Not Stainless Steel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I was also\nnot as big of a fan of the Tailgaters construction. It is nice enough, but it is\nnot stainless steel like the others I looked at. You had to spend a lot more\nmoney to get these features which are found on Traeger\u2019s larger models, and\nthen I would lose the portability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trager Tailgater has a Big Cooking Area, But Also A Big Variance In Temperature<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the nice things about the Tailgater is that it has a large cooking area of 300 square inches. That\u2019s the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> largest of the portables. It has a hopper with an 8 lb capacity and a temperature range of 180\u00ba F to 450\u00ba F. The temperature variance seems high though, being within 20 degrees as compared to others as low as five degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Rec Tec (recteq) RT-340<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I have a friend who has a Rec Tec (name changed to recteq) grill in his Motorcoaches summer kitchen, and it\u2019s a monster. The construction of the grill is like a tank. Right down to the 304 polished stainless handles shaped like bull horns! His is the RT-700, and just standing next to it made me drool. Now, this is a serious grill, but not a portable one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At that point, I didn\u2019t know if they made a portable one, but I was definitely going to check. It turns out they do make a portable one; the RT-340. Weighing in at 92 pounds, it\u2019s just too heavy to be a portable RV grill. This is one of the reasons why it\u2019s lighter than the other grills, weighing only 58 pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Green Mountain Grills offer Lots of Features<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As small as it is, the Davy Crockett Green Mountain Pellet Grill does not lack features. It has Wi-Fi and a single meat temperature probe. There is an app that lets you fully customize your cooking profiles, and the temperature is adjustable from 150\u00ba F to 550\u00ba F in 5-degree increments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Green Mountain Grills Has Many Accessories Available<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another great feature of the Green Mountain grills is the cool accessories. They have all the typical accessories that you see with the other pellet grill manufacturers, but one of the coolest ones we found is a Wood Fired Pizza Oven Attachment! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Careful though, there are two different models of pizza grill attachments, and the one that fits the Davy Crockett is the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2ThE7ze\" target=\"_blank\">GMG-4108<\/a> 10\u201dx10\u201d. Coming in at just over $300, it\u2019s over $100 cheaper than the others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It does not sacrifice quality to achieve this. Quality construction along with stainless steel grilling grates, makes it stack up very well against the competitors. The fold-able legs that double as handles along with the weight savings make for a truly portable grill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The big\ndrawback to this grill is its smaller cooking area.
